Clean the original image in your browser
Free AI Wiper can inspect and remove supported metadata from still AVIF and HEIC images. You do not need to convert the image to JPEG first. The cleaner preserves the encoded picture, including its color and transparency information, and processes the file locally without uploading it.
HEIC and AVIF can carry camera details, private information and provenance records. A supported record may contain EXIF fields, XMP or C2PA Content Credentials. Their presence does not automatically establish that an image was generated by AI. Credential signature validation is a separate check.
How to remove AVIF or HEIC metadata
- Keep a copy of your original, then select Images in the cleaner.
- Choose a still AVIF or HEIC file of up to 25 MiB. A HEIF file is accepted when its container identifies a supported HEIC image.
- Review the findings. Recognized AI provenance and ordinary EXIF or XMP records are shown separately.
- Choose whether to remove private metadata as well as AI metadata. Removal applies to a whole supported record; ordinary fields inside a selected record are removed with it.
- Clean the file and review the after-report before downloading it.
Some browsers cannot display a HEIC preview. The cleaner reads metadata independently of the browser's image decoder, so an unavailable preview does not prevent a supported file from being processed. Open the download in an application that supports the original format to check its appearance.
Why the cleaned file can be the same size
These formats use item locations and offsets to find their image data. Closing a gap left by removed metadata could invalidate those offsets. Free AI Wiper clears the selected metadata bytes in place and disables the selected metadata record while keeping the file length and image locations unchanged.
A same-size download therefore does not mean the selected metadata was kept. The cleaner checks the output again and compares every byte against the permitted metadata changes. Unselected records and image properties must remain unchanged.
Supported metadata and limits
The processor handles recognized C2PA UUID boxes, supported XMP UUID boxes, and EXIF or uncompressed XMP metadata items stored locally in the file's media-data or item-data areas. It does not scan arbitrary compressed image bytes for AI authorship.
Animated sequences, protected items, externally stored item data, compressed metadata and unsupported item-location layouts are rejected. An error means the file could not be safely processed; it is not a clean result. The image format page lists the broader supported image workflows.
Metadata removal does not remove an invisible watermark
A visible logo or an invisible watermark embedded in pixels is separate from EXIF, XMP and Content Credentials. Cleaning metadata does not remove those signals or guarantee that a social platform will stop displaying an AI label. Read AI metadata versus watermarks before interpreting a clean report.
C2PA also supports fingerprints and watermarks that can reconnect a file to provenance stored elsewhere. Removing an embedded credential cannot guarantee that the association is gone. See the C2PA binding specification and our metadata-cleaning test method for the limits of verification.
